How Bad Will It Get?

How is it that we have allowed things to get so bad that we can't even count on there being rice on the shelf at the grocery store? Obviously we, in America, are very fortunate and don't even need to have rice in order to sustain our people. Many countries are not so fortunate. What is a simple inconvenience for us is a real threat for many people throughout the world. Many rely on rice for much of their nutrition.

Props To Jungle Mom For This One

You Are A Peanut

You are popular, even with people who tend to have picky taste.

Kids love you, as do dogs. From rednecks to snobs, most people have a place for you in their hearts.

As popular as you are, there are some people who can't be near you.

Don't take it too personally. There's just a few people you rub the wrong way.

Mmmmm!!!

Anyone out there got some butter and crackers and a skillet?

I Hope the Price is Right!

The Chiefs will receive Minnesota's first and both of its third-round picks as compensation. The teams also swapped spots in the sixth round, with Minnesota getting Kansas City's 187th overall pick, and the Chiefs getting the Vikings' 182nd selection. The Chiefs gained five spots in the sixth round to go along with the 17th, 73rd and 82nd overall picks. This seems like it has the potential to be worth the cost as the Chiefs need to be rebuilt this year. The Chiefs will now have 13 picks in the NFL draft. Jared Allen will certainly be missed here in Kansas City as he was one of very few bright spots for us last season. We wish him well in Minnesota and thank him for his service here.

Ought To Be

It's so very sad to me. Life is just so bent. God has written His story on our hearts so that we know when things are not as they ought to be. "Things like this ought not happen." How many time have you heard those words? Everyone knows this because everyone has God's story written on their hearts whether they acknowledge it or not, whether they love the story or hate it. The Bible says that creation groans and suffers and as a part of that creation I can feel the suffering and long for a day when creation will be renewed and set right. A day when things will indeed be as they ought to be.

I Corinthians 13:12 -- "Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."

Heartbroken!

If this man here is to blame............

.........why are these women the ones to be stripped of their children?

This is certainly an intricate situation but the thought of me being without my children saddens me to the point of tears. There will be blame enough to go around to all parties but why must the children be the fulcrum on which the parties exert force on one another? Even though it is unclear who holds the roll of "guilty" it is crystal clear that the children bear the brunt of the punishment.

Birthday Update

We're having a great day!!! Kim and the girls let me sleep in this morning until almost 10:00 AM. Normally my alarm goes off at 5:15 AM. After a breakfast consisting of chocolate donuts that my girls picked out for me we went to the mall. A carousel ride, a walk through the Disney store and we were back on the road. On our way home we stopped at a couple of garage sales and got some clothes for the girls and some jars for canning. After lunch the girls took a nap and Kim and I got a little bit of quiet (and yet a little rowdy) time together. This afternoon was nice outside and the girls put their artistic skills to work to draw a picture of me in chalk. If this doesn't sound like your ideal birthday, I apologize. For me it was perfect!!! After all, what are birthdays for if not for showing the ones that we love that we truly KNOW them. This lazy day was a gift for me and I will treasure it. Thank you family for your love!!!

It's My Birthday

It's my birthday and so I'll be steppin' out in style today. With all good luck I'll spend the day in peace with my best friend, my wife Kimberly, and my strong and kind children. This has been a great year and each day we are given is one with which to celebrate life.

Cowboy Creed

Tonight the girls and I are going to the 4th grade program that Kim is directing. It has a cowboy theme and so the girls thought that we should "get all cowboyed up" for it. They went downstairs and got on their chosen cowboy best and came back up to show me. They had the hats and boots and sheriff stars and of course their gunbelts and guns. I told them that we were going to have to leave the guns at home since the kids in the program were not allowed to bring guns. After seeing their sadness I attempted to cheer them up and said that they could still wear their belts if they wanted. My Arianwyn gave me one of those "silly daddy you just don't understand" looks and matter of factly said --

"DADDY, A COWBOY NEVER WEARS A BELT WITHOUT A GUN"

I couldn't be more proud!!!

Honestly!!!

And the winner in this fight is ----------- John McCain!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, I don't claim to be the smartest man in the world or anything but I'm no fool either. This cartoon makes me wonder a couple of things. The first one is wouldn't the most logical agenda of someone attempting to TRULY do what's best for the largest number of American citizens be based on how to bring down the price of gasoline and diesel and bring it down in a hurry? I can't think of any issue that directly affects a larger percent of the population. Our entire economy is tied to it. Our amount of expendable income for things such as health care and retirement are dependent upon what we have left after spending the money we need to spend in order to buy gas and food at an inflated cost. You have to get to work in order to have any money to do anything with and you have to eat. Yet I have not heard any mention of any plan to directly affect the price of gasoline or diesel. Any mention of either of these fuels is always tied to alternative fuels for the future. This is a fools argument as an increase in alternative fuels only causes an increase in feed for livestock of all sorts. This then results in a higher cost of beef, chicken, pork, milk, eggs, etc.... Not to mention that ethanol is not cheaper than gasoline anyway when you factor in the reality that ethanol reduces your miles per gallon. The TRUE issue here is unbridled greed. The other thing that I wonder is how much money it actually takes to build a refinery and just how many refineries the money spent on this campaign would have purchased. The TRUE issue here is unbridled power and control. When will we have the guts to tell our politicians ENOUGH? Let's remember who is suppose to be working for whom!!!

Let Us Follow The Wise

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends. -- Shel Silverstein

A Meme From Eitan

I have been the recipient of a meme from my friend Eitan. Here is the set-up.
"This is what you gotta do: pick a picture fitting the scenario and post 10 things you (personally) want to ask of G-d."
Here goes:

1 - Please draw me closer and increase my faith,

2 - Help me be the husband you want me to be.

3 - Keep my girls strong and smart and kind.

4 - Help me be the father you want me to be.

5 - Help me be the man you want me to be.

6 - Please continue to keep us healthy and strong.

7 - Bring peace to Israel.

8 - Protect our troops.

9 - Cause our rulers to make good decisions.

10 - Help our garden to grow well.

Garden Time!!!

I am a very novice gardener. The past two years I have had two 3x3 square foot gardens. I loved every part of it. It feels great to have your hands sifting through good dirt on a warm day. I love the smiles on my young girls faces when they find a BIG worm. I love their love for dirt. I love watching the miracle of the first little seedlings ripping through the surface and opening up to bask in the sun. I love the feeling inside when we pick the first of the harvest and my girls thank God for the sun and the rain. I love that their young spirits recognize God as the author of life and good gifts and the garden is a very tangible way of them seeing that. This year we are expanding our garden into a small regular garden about 8 x 15. We plan on growing summer squash, tomatoes, green peppers, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, carrots, shallots, romaine lettuce, spinach, and red potatoes. If all goes well with the weather we hope to plant sometime this weekend. Any other novice gardeners out there?

Trust Your Dog's Intuition

Any dog lover will tell you that if your dog does not trust somebody you would be well advised to be very wary about them as well. This sense that has been built into dogs is amazingly accurate. They are some of the best judges of character upon first impression. In that vein I offer this proof:

What a Man and What a Legacy

What is there to say about a man who has done as much as Charleton Heston did? Some will remember him for such roles as Ben-Hur or Moses. Some will remember him campaigning for Ronald Reagan or for John F. Kennedy. Some will remember him for boldly yelling out the words "from my cold dead hands." Some will remember him for standing near Martin Luther King Jr. as he gave the now legendary "I Have a Dream" speech. Perhaps most importantly some will remember him for being a husband of 64 years and a loving family man. He certainly is tied to the fabric from which our country was weaved no matter what you remember him for. Godspeed Mr. Heston.
